THE PARKING LOT MOVIE (2010)

A funny little documentary filled with people (both the parking lot attendees and their customers) I would probably dislike if I met them in person.  The guy in the hat above — yeah, he’s one of the “good” guys.

THE AMERICAN (2010)

I heard this was more meditative than high-octane, and that definitely is the case.  There are maybe 2 or 3 actions scenes, and the rest is straight character study, but it’s good character study.  Clooney is one of those rare actors who can entertain without doing much of anything, and even though the script tests that theory (externally), THE AMERICAN is still beautiful to look at and extremely satisfying.

EASY A (2010)

Date viewed:  2/10/11

2nd viewing within a couple weeks b/c my wife hadn’t seen it.  She liked it, but strangely enough I think I like it more.  The John Hughes shout-out gets me every time.

RED (2010)

A fun action-comedy that with a little more action and a sharper wit could have been great.  As it is, it’s exactly what I expected.

THE RUNAWAYS (2010)

Date viewed:  2/3/11

Having heard mixed reviews of THE RUNAWAYS, I didn’t have any expectations to speak of, and I’m glad I didn’t.  It was much darker and “edgier” than I would’ve guessed, with some truly shocking stuff from Dakota Fanning, considering her age.

Like most people, I’m more familiar with Joan Jett than the rest of the band, and I would’ve preferred a movie more about her than her band mates, but this is a first rate rock ‘n’ roll movie, complete with the necessary sex, drugs, and great music.  A re-watch on Blu-Ray is called for.

EASY A (2010)

Very sneaky, makers of EASY A, very sneaky indeed.  You think you can just throw in a few clips of my favorite teen ’80s movies along with good writing and funny performances and expect me to like it?  Well yeah, that actually works fairly well.  A throw-back to John Hughes movies and CAN’T BUY ME LOVE (but mostly CAN’T BUY ME LOVE), EASY A might just be the most entertaining new release I’ve seen over the last few months.

INCEPTION (2010)

Date viewed:  1/22/11

Third viewing of INCEPTION, first time at home.  I still love it, but I’m not a fan of Marion Cotillard, and her sections of the film are beginning to wear on me.

THE LAST EXORCISM (2010)

Maybe it was a result of watching THE LAST EXORCISM in the middle of the day, but I definitely missed what so many people found scary and/or good about it.  Unfortunately, the consistent high praise I’d heard for the movie over the last several months didn’t help either.  I’m sure I would have enjoyed it much more as a traditionally-shot narrative.  Other than for monetary concerns, I can no longer see the point in shooting a faux documentary — the style has lost all effectiveness.

BARRY MUNDAY (2010)

Date viewed:  1/14/11

I’d heard positive things about BARRY MUNDAY and I’m a bit of a Patrick Wilson fan, so I was looking forward to what I expected would be a dark comedy (based on the subject matter).  Turns out, it’s actually more of a straight forward romantic comedy, but one of the better ones.  More cute than funny, but it doesn’t fail to entertain.

FROZEN (2010)

Great concept, good story, well executed suspense, but terrible characters.  There are about 45 minutes in FROZEN that are really good; the rest is both boring and annoying.  I would watch again, but not without skipping a few chapters.
